Our Marriages Must Become Holy
I was looking for something in Preserving the Restoration and got sucked into the chapter on marriage. There are some real gems in there, here are a few.
“Before the establishment of Zion, there must be marriages worthy of God’s protection. Zion is eternal because it is built on an eternal covenant with God. God’s word and those who receive it from Him have no end, they are everlasting, have all power, and all of this comes through the covenant of marriage, between a man and a woman–which is the image of God. Does your marriage reflect the image of God?”“Does your marriage help uncover your sins? We will not begin to first solve a problem with covering up our sins after arriving in Zion, for it must be solved first. Unity must begin within the walls of our own homes. We will never achieve a Zion community until Zion exists in our own homes within our family relationships. Husbands and wives need to have marriages in the image of God. Pride and vain ambition are destructive to relationships. Do you work to exalt the two of you, rather than yourself? Are you exercising control or do you respect your spouses’ freedom to choose?”“Behold, their husbands love their wives, and their wives love their husbands; and their husbands and wives love their children; and their unbelief and their hatred towards you is because of the iniquity of their fathers; wherefore, how much better are you than they, in the sight of your great creator.”[This passage in Jacob shows that marriage above everything else, is the image of God. This is what God intends to preserve into eternity. It is so much easier for God to take people who have this kind of marriage and preserve them than to take someone who may know all the mysteries, but whose marriage is in ruins, and preserve them because they are more godly.]“If we believe the scriptures, and Joseph Smith and the Restoration, then we know the work is still incomplete. We face challenges. One of the greatest is holy matrimony. Our marriages must become holy. There are many people in broken homes and broken families who long to live in a godly marriage. We face no challenge in this world we are unable to overcome. We do not get tempted above our ability to withstand. God has something in mind for every one of us. Each one will be cared for in His due time. Trust in Him. Take your problems to Him and weary Him.”
